Biography
Praised for his “searingly poetic lyricism” (UK Daily Telegraph), Philippe Quint stands as one of America's leading violinists, captivating audiences with his “breadth of tone and passion” (The New York Times). With multiple Grammy Award nominations for several of his recordings, Quint is consistently recognized for his innovative performances of classical repertoire, advocacy for contemporary music. As Founder and Music Director of Magellan Arts and Magellan Chamber Orchestra, he is now entering the organization's second season, continuing the Chamber Music Immersive Series in partnership with the Chicago History Museum through innovative performances and impactful educational programs.
Quint has performed with world-class orchestras including the London Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. His dedication to contemporary music is evident in numerous premieres by today’s foremost composers, including Errollyn Wallen, Lera Auerbach, William Bolcom and John Corigliano to name only a few. His boundless curiosity led him to also create original multimedia format programs such as The Muse, Homage to J.S. Bach, Charlie Chaplin’s Smile, and Astor Piazzolla: Between Angels and Demons.
Highlights of his 2026–2027 season include a return to the Cabrillo Festival with Cristian Măcelaru for the world premiere of Clarice Assad’s Kontrol; a return to the Royal Scottish National Orchestra for the UK premiere of Lera Auerbach’s Violin Concerto No. 1 with Bassem Akiki; the Irish premiere of Errollyn Wallen’s Violin Concerto with the Ulster Orchestra under Anna Handler; leading the Vancouver Symphony (USA) in performances of Vivaldi’s and Piazzolla’s The Four Seasons; and his debut with the Fort Worth Symphony under Anna Skryleva.
During his 2024/2025 season, Quint premiered a violin concerto written for him by Belize-born British composer Errollyn Wallen. This co-commissioned work which The Times, London called ‘exhilarating and playful’ saw its critically acclaimed premieres with the Calgary Philharmonic (Rune Bergmann), the Kansas City Symphony (Matthias Pintscher), UK Premiere with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (Joana Carneiro), Brevard Festival Orchestra (Keith Lockhart), Cabrillo Festival (Cristian Macelaru). Quint subsequently gave the German premiere with the Magdeburg Philharmonic (Anna Skryleva) and the Spanish premiere with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia (Catherine Larson-Maguire).
Quint released Wallen’s Violin Concerto on the PENTATONE label in spring 2025 to widespread critical acclaim, alongside Lera Auerbach’s Violin Concerto No. 1, composed for him in 2001, with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra under Andrew Litton. The album also features Odyssey Rhapsody, written for Quint by his mother, composer Lora Kvint.
Highlights of his 17 commercially released recordings include Chaplin’s Smile (Warner Classics), Opera Breve ( AvantiClassic), and notable Naxos recordings such as the multi Grammy-nominated albums of Concertos by W. Schumann and Korngold, world premiere recording of John Corigliano's The Red Violin Caprices and Concertos by Bruch, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, Khachaturian, Glazunov for AvantiClassic.As an active chamber musician, Quint has performed at major festivals including Mostly Mozart, Verbier, and Ravinia, and at venues such as the Kravis Center and National Gallery in Washington.
Prior to establishing his base in New York in 1991, Quint studied at Moscow’s Special Music School under Andrei Korsakov and went on to earn his bachelor's and master's degrees from The Juilliard School, where he studied with Dorothy DeLay and Cho-Liang Lin while also receiving mentorship from Isaac Stern, Itzhak Perlman, and Arnold Steinhardt.
Philippe Quint plays the magnificent 1708 "Ruby" Antonio Stradivari violin on loan to him through the generous efforts of The Stradivari Society®.
